mind your FLDS

today, whilst meandering the chaotic aisles of the grocery store, i stumbled upon an odity, even for this area. it was about 1:15 and i was deliberating over spinach when i felt a skirt brush my calf. i looked over and she took my breath away… all 50 yards of god awful fabric, long braided ponytail, slouchy sweater et all… and then i saw three more of them, all conglomerated around the avocados. such a strange sight for idaho falls. it was like a real live version of an episode of “sister wives”!

at first i wanted to smirk. i wanted to let out a catty laugh under my breath and ostentatiously eyeball them as i walked by. but as i made my iron-rich spinachy decision, i though to myself, “why?” why should i judge them for their lifestyle choice? do i agree with it? absolutely not. it’s not that i disagree with polygamy so much (i firmly believe that, even though we desperately try to overcome it, humans were not meant for sexual monogamy). it’s all the little nuances within their faith that i heartily disagree with; marrying off 14 year old girls to 50 year old men, for example, or how they hunt down fleeing members like dogs. for an insider look at the lifestyle, read:

instead of deriding them for their lifestyle choices, however, i would like to extend some kudos. bravo to you for telling the rest of the world to mind their own fucking business about who you take to bed. i acknowledge your idiocy and your bravery.

Free To Breathe – business sketch

ok, idaho falls seriously needs a donation based yoga program… check this out:

YOGA TO THE PEOPLE

mission: body movement should be as easy and free as breathing

vision: a donation based studio with a focus on yoga and possibly other relaxation/movement activities led by qualified instructors. people can choose to donate as much or as little as they like. supporting members (members who pay a set amount every month) will have certain benefits that non-supporting members do not. ideas are welcome on that particular subject… kinda like a co-op for yoga!

back to skool

so today wraps up my first week back to skool. not elementary skool, thank goodness, i went back to the college :) i’m diggin’ my classes and even though i have to take dumb kid math, i’m loving that too! i’m approaching it in an entirely different way this time; getting involved, talking to people, using a planner/calender to ensure i’m on time for tests/projects, etc…

classes this semester:

  • dumb kid math
  • introduction to anatomy and physiology (i even get a coloring book for this class)
  • introduction to psychology – i love this class so much. it was almost ruined for me the last time around, but i think it’ll be ok this time
  • introduction to massage therapy – this class is going to be great! the professor just needs to figure out how to use blackboard…

so wish me luck kids, i’m going to need it!

garlic shrimp and broccoli – paleo recipe

garlic shrimp and steamed broccoli

1lb peeled, de-pooped shrimp

1 crown broccoli

minced garlic

sea salt (fine)

peanut oil

cut broccoli into little trees :) put them in a pot with about 1/2 inch of water. steam over med/high heat until tender.

while broccoli is steaming, put a tbsp of oil in a skillet, heat to medium, add shrimp, garlic and sea salt to taste. cook until shrimp is done (pink and opaque).

when broccoli is done, drain and add shrimp to the pot. mix and serve!

GutterFlower Bridal – business sketch

i don’t know about y’all, but every so often i watch DUMB tv shows. seriously. DUMB. but every so often something great comes out of those DUMB tv shows. for example; i had the coolest idea after watching a marathon of TLC’s “say yes to the dress”. it’s a show about brides-to-be searching for that perfect dress for their wedding. i know, it’s awfully girly of me, but i just can’t help it, i like dresses :) i noticed how many of the brides were shopping on a budget. at the same time as i was watching the show, i was perusing craigslist (yes, i was being utterly unproductive) and noticed the amount of wedding dresses that were listed and re-listed. i came to the conclusion that brides want a good deal but many of them don’t think to purchase a used dress from anywhere other than a bridal store and there are TONS of brides out there who need to sell their used dresses. so why not open up a 2nd chance bridal store?! how fun would that be? People are getting hitched all the time, especially in this area. i just think it would be a top notch service to provide brides and i’m amazed that there isn’t one here already…

GutterFlower Bridal - i want to call it GutterFlower because that name highlights the fact that the dresses aren’t brand spanking new but that there is also a charm in that very fact. kind of like the island for lost toys, GutterFlower values each dress that comes in the door because they’ve still got so much love to give.

mission: fulfilling the frugal bride’s wedding fantasy and giving used wedding dresses a 2nd chance to shine!

vision: GutterFlower Bridal will be either a consignment boutique or will purchase used wedding items outright to re-sell. the atmosphere will be light and easy yet professional. i want the shopping experience to be sophisticated yet fun. the decor will be champagne/blush/gold in baroque style and the store would smell like cake (think marie antoinette). As soon as the bride enters the room, she’s greeted like a close girlfriend and offered champagne. she’ll be seated and interviewed about her wedding and what shape/style/color she’s looking for in a dress. then they get started. i want the inventory to be VERY reasonably priced, however, i want to give brides who are selling their items a fair price.

product: i want to carry any kind of used wedding items i can find

  • dresses
  • sash’s
  • shoes
  • veils
  • jewelry
  • wedding sets

services:

  • champagne
  • appointments with your favorite consultant
  • i think it would be nice to have a couple preachers/bishops on standby to bless the used items for the brides who are religious and who might have a hard time with the thought that it’s a used item and somebody else’s ju-ju is all over it…
  • referrals to other bridal services

marketing:

  • participating in bridal shows!!!
  • cross promotion with other local businesses (cake stores, wine shops, stationary businesses, people with cool houses that the bridal party could rent out, things like that)
  • referral programs
  • seasonal sales
  • commercials
  • social networking

this little business really wouldn’t cost much to start, especially if it was run as a consignment shop. the over head would basically be the location, utilities and paperwork.
